Island of Hawaii (Big Island)

The youngest island in the Hawaiian archipelago (a mere half-million years old), Hawaii Island is still growing thanks to an energetic volcano. Because it is larger than all the other islands combined, Hawai’i island has been nick-named “The Big Island.”

Polynesian voyagers from Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands are believed to have first made landfall on the island of Hawai’i. Hawai’i Island was also the home of Pai’ea Kamehameha, also known as Kamehameha the Great, who was the first warrior to bring together the Hawaiian Islands under one rule. Hawai’i Island is also the storied home of the legendary goddess of the volcano, Pele. No wonder Hawaii Island is host to the preeminent annual hula festival in the world. The arts, cultural traditions and celebrations of the Hawaiian history and culture all thrive here on Hawai’i Island.

Kohala Coast

Along a 20-mile stretch of the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, luxury resorts reside in harmony with remnants of this ancient civilization. Historic sites intermingle with championship golf courses, and luxury hotels bow to the beauty of restored fishponds as visitors walk paths once trod by ancient Hawaiians.

Uncompromising quality in service and accommodations at all of this destination’s luxury resort hotels, as well as golf, tennis, water sports, spa, cuisine, and romantic opportunities are just a few of the reasons the Kohala Coast has become a favorite for the discriminating traveler.

Mauna Lani

Mauna Lani is situated on the ancient “ili” of Kalahuipua’a, which was once a royal recreation spot. On its grounds lies a well-preserved complex of ancient royal fishponds, which the resort has taken great pains to conserve. Makaewa Bay offers owners the opportunity to snorkel, paddle board and swim in one of the most scenic bays on the island.

The Fairmont Orchid and the new Auberge Resort anchor the shoreline with 5 star service and luxury. The Shops at Mauna Lani feature many luxury boutiques and eateries including Ruth Chris’s Steak House and Tommy Bahamas Shop and Restaurant. Foodland Farms offers quality and convenience to resort residents and visitors including a wide variety of food and necessities.

The fishponds remain perfectly functional to this day and are the heart and soul of the resort, with many regarding the complex as a special, hallowed place. Strolling through the area, with the light Kona breeze in your hair, you get a sense of what Hawaiians call the Spirit of Place.

Along with the peace and calm of Mauna Lani’s historic core, you will also find uniquely Hawaiian activities that will revive even the most worn out souls.

The Kohala sunsets and star-strewn skies are a timeless cosmic canopy, under which you will undoubtedly be enjoying beautiful and unmatched ocean views.
